Pocket irrigation, or oral irrigation, is a dental cleaning treatment that can be performed as part of a professional dental cleaning or at home with an oral irrigating device.

Pocket irrigations clear plaque, food particles, and other debris from between your teeth, keeping the gum pockets cleaning and shallower. This also helps to prevent halitosis (bad breath). Pocket irrigating devices have a rounded tip, which reduces the risk of tissue damage, and facilitates a more extensive cleaning by flushing bacteria and other harmful debris out from below the gum line.

Our dentist may also use a pocket irrigation treatment to deliver antimicrobials to help remove bacteria below the gum lines.

Pocket irrigation can be performed at home using a water jet or water pick. This is less harmful to your soft tissue than dental floss, but should not be used as a substitute for a professional dental cleaning.
