Oral pathology is the examination of the soft tissues of your mouth to diagnose any developing dental problems. If our dentist notices an abnormality during your routine exam, he may perform an oral pathology to determine what the problem is and how to treat it. The soft tissues of your mouth are normally lined with mucosa, a special type of skin that appears smooth in texture and pink in color when healthy. Changes in the color or texture of this tissue can indicate the beginning of a dental disease or other pathological process. These changes can occur in all areas of the mouth (gums, tongue, lips, etc.) as well as on the face and neck. The most serious potential problem is oral cancer, but there are many other pathologic problems that could occur.
The majority of pathological problems are not life threatening. However, as oral cancer can threaten your life, and an early diagnosis can greatly increase your chances of survival. Seeking treatment when you first notice an irregularity could be a life or death decision.
For less serious problems, our dentist may recommend antibiotics or diluted hydrogen peroxide to kill off harmful bacteria, or oral surgery to remove problems and improve your level of comfort and health.
When you visit our dentist for a regular checkup, he will thoroughly examine the soft tissues of your mouth and note any abnormalities or changes. If there are cell changes present, he will take a biopsy sample of the area for analysis before determining which treatment, if any, is necessary.
